Just a few tidbits with Breeders Cup 2006 this Saturday.
The new Excalibur Race and Sports book is in full operation in its new location near the Rotunda area in the back of the casino where the Poker Room was located. They have 25 individual plasma monitors for the horse players and a big sports book seating over 80 fans.
There are also tables in the back with seating, along with seven bar tops which can also be used for racing fans. If you are looking for a nice place to hang, just stop by and check it out. Say hello to "Big Ed" Malinowski, who runs the place. He will be happy to see you.
Another place of interest for me this Saturday will be Jerry’s Nugget in North Las Vegas. Don’t let North Las Vegas scare you, it reminds me of my favorite neighborhood hang out back in the "Ville.". Race and Sports Director Mark Dufty will be featuring a Breeders’ Cup parlay card, which will be enough to get me there to take a shot. I just may head down on Friday and get my parlays in so I don’t change my mind when seeing the odds.
My least favorite pro sport, the NBA, starts this Tuesday and head man David Stern is asking his players to leave their guns at home. Wow, that’s pretty stern isn’t it! I think the ACLU should get involved. Shoot, I see no reason they should have to leave their guns at home! In fact, they should have them on the court in case of a flagrant foul. They could just gun down the other player. Geez!
For all you Steubenville Big Red fans out there, the mighty Big Red finished their fourth straight 10-0 undefeated season. They now head into the Ohio High School State Championship playoffs starting this Saturday at Harding Stadium. We wish Reno and his team the best.
Before getting to this week’s college football picks. I told everyone that my good buddy Syl never picks a winner. Those who took heed scored big with Oakland this past Sunday in one of the ugliest games I’ve seen in quite a while.
Wednesday, Nov. 1
Fresno St +26 at Boise St (61): Broncos looking for revenge from last year’s 27-7 loss at Fresno. Now come the hapless Bulldogs on the big blue carpet. I see no let up here. BOISE/OVER.
Friday, Nov. 3
Air Force -7 at Army: Big shot here for the Army as the fly boys just can’t get off the ground this year. Two weeks ago "the Force" got beat by San Diego State, who lost last week to Cal Poly 16-14. ARMY
Saturday, Nov. 4
BC -4 at Wake Forest: Could be undefeated except for hard luck loss at NC State 17-15. BC is playing great and looks to be on a mission with a defense that hasn’t given up spit since the 33 to Clemson in Game 2. Wake was life and death in win over North Carolina. BC
Indiana +4½ at Minn: Gophers in their last three games have scored 12 against Wisconsin, 10 against North Dakota State and zip against the Buckeyes. Hoosiers have some offense and have been playing with a lot of spunk. A field goal likely decides. INDIANA.
Ohio St -26½ at Illinois: Must stay with red hot Ohio State defense that just don’t give up anything! OHIO ST.
Ole Miss +13½ at Alabama: Really don’t like laying points with Bama, but just can’t side with a team that could not beat Kentucky in its own back yard. ALABAMA
TCU -20 at UNLV: Just another go against team. The Rebels have only covered one game all year, a 16-10 loss in Game 2 at Iowa State. TCU has a big time defense, which will shut down the Rebs. Four TDs should produce the cover. TCU.
Hawaii -27 at Utah St (69): The Rainbow Warriors crushed Utah State last year 50-23. This year, they are better. The Aggies are outright bad. Hawaii has been averaging 54 per game in the last five and posted 68 at Fresno State. So 60 is well within reach. One thing about Hawaii is that they don’t call the dogs off. HAWAII.
BYU -15 at Colo St: BYU on major red hot roll 7-0-1 ATS), having won and covered five straight games. The Rams are on a three game losing streak with losses to Air Force, Wyoming and New Mexico. Bet the Cougars before the number reaches 17. BYU.
Penn St +7 at Wisconsin: This should be a real good game, closer than most people think. Penn State doesn’t score much but its defense will keep them in the game. With some luck, Nittany Lions could get the win. PENN ST.
UCLA +17 at Cal: Well if you happen to be stuck, I think you can get even with the Golden Bears. We have several things going here like revenge. UCLA won last year 27-20. Cal is hot, winning seven straight games (5-1 ATS) since an opening loss at Tennessee. UCLA has lost three straight and has little offense. Cal this it can meet Ohio State with wins in the last four games. BEST BET: CAL
NFL (please, remember to bet the opposite)
Ravens -3½, Cowboys -3, (Don’t you just love the name Tony Romo, it’s the best name of a QB since Joe Montana. TB Bucs +1 (best bet), Steelers -2, Patriots -1.
