The face of the slot machines of the future will become more recognizable as Aristocrat Leisure begins a field trial of its downloadable slot technology, often called server-based gaming.

The field trial will take place at the sprawling Pechanga Resort and Casino in Riverside, California. This field trial marks the initial phase of Aristocrat’s multi-stage development process for its high-tech slot technology.

This downloadable slot system will enable casino operators to change game content and game configurations, while utilizing a user-friendly interface ensuring ease and flexibility on their casino floor.

Essentially, this means the "slot machines" on the casino floor will be basically generic boxes in which a variety of different games, configurations and denominations can be downloaded from a central server system located off the floor.

"Optimizing floor yield is one of the major advantages of downloadable technology, creating an environment for stronger game performance, reducing game deployment time and allowing for instant portfolio management," stated Kent Young, global general manager, marketing for Aristocrat. "Aristocrat DL Technology delivers more efficiency, more titles and more options than ever before, capitalizing on Aristocrat’s proprietary MKVI game content on our MAV500 slot machine."

When server-based systems are fully deployed, downloadable slots could have up to 200-300 different games available to download.

"We are thrilled to partner with Aristocrat on this new evolution of gaming," said Red Wootan, Pechanga’s vice president of slot operations. "Aristocrat’s DL Technology provides us the flexibility to offer the games our players want when they want them."

Currently, Pechanga’s casino floor contains a mix of mostly Class 3 slots, along with a few hundred Class 2 (bingo style) machines. The addition of downloadable slots will further expand the number and variety of games for players.

"We always strive to be the leaders in technology in the casino/hospitality industry and our partnership with Aristocrat’s downloadable games allows Pechanga to continue to lead," added Vice President of Information Technology Rod Luck.

Aristocrat expects to have a commercial version of their downloadable solution available for deployment in the second half of 2007, pending regulatory approvals.

Based in Las Vegas, Aristocrat Leisure Limited is the North American arm of Australia-based Aristocrat Leisure. Pechanga Resort & Casino is located in the rural Temecula Valley, near Riverside and San Bernardino.
