Big Red has fans!

The e-mails have been rolling in asking about the Big Red and how are they doing.

The Ohio State Championship game will be played 3 p.m. this Friday at legendary Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon. The Steubenville Big Red will face off with Kettering Alter. Both teams enter 14-0. Big Red is on a 29 game winning streak and hope to defend the title. Steubenville also finished its fourth straight 10-0 season. The results in next week’s column.

Last week, I received a letter from Mike McCusker, who I hadn’t heard from in over 20 years. In my early Vegas days (late 1970s) I ran a sports service called Wesco Sports Group Inc. In those days Mike was the watchdog over most major services. He would let everyone know, who were the frauds and which services were doing a good job. I don’t think Mike gained many friends, but I guess he is still around. Some people better beware.

USC really slammed it to the not so Fighting Irish. The Notre Dame defense has been lousy all season and proved it again. Also, it is a very difficult task to go into a big game like this after playing North Carolina, Air Force, and Army. We jest. Meanwhile, USC entered off matchups with Oregon and California.

I’m not one to talk results but, after last week’s Hawaii game got bet up to -21 from -16, I just had to take the points and wash my -16 initial wager. There are times when the public just runs amuck.

THURSDAY

MAC Championship

Ohio +3 vs C. Mich: Did not play this year, but the Chippewas crushed the Bobcats in last year’s matchup 37-10. I see a very different outcome here. Ohio has rattled off seven straight wins, giving up an average of 13 points. Ohio enters on a roll and its defense will make the difference. OHIO.

FRIDAY

C-USA Championship

So Miss +4½ at Houston (54): In their meeting early in the year, the Golden Eagles defeated the Cougars in Hattiesburg 31-27 as a two point favorite. The spread looks right on. I’d have probably laid -3 with Houston. Now, I will just the total in what should be a shootout OVER.

SATURDAY

USC -13½ at UCLA (48): This would be good to watch if it weren’t on ABC and the stupid commentary. UCLA has a big shot in this game, but I bought the game down to -13 and made an early play on the Trojans, hoping it will go to -14. If so, I’ll make a double bet on the Bruins +14½ on the buy up. I may even make a little play on UCLA on the money line. Both defenses should be fired up. UCLA +14½, UNDER 48.

Air Force +14 at TCU: The Horned Frogs have way too much firepower for the Falcons to overcome. Plus the Force could be way down after loss at Vegas. TCU.

ACC Championship

Wake +2½ vs Ga Tech (41): At Jacksonville. I really liked the way the Demon Deacons came back from loss to Virginia Tech. They just put it to a tough Terrapins bunch. Georgia Tech could only beat North Carolina 7-0, managed one touchdown against Clemson and lost 15-12 to Georgia. Wake should be favored so the points are a bonus. WF.

SEC Championship

Arkansas +2½ vs Florida (45): At the Georgia Dome. Razorbacks bubble burst last week in loss at home to LSU. The Gators were able to pull out another close game. Florida laying less then a field goal looks like a good bet. UF.

Big 12 Championship

Nebraska +4 vs Oklahoma (46): At Kansas City. Equal teams. Good spot for taking the points. NEBRASKA.

NFL (reminder, bet opposite!)

THURSDAY

Bengals -3.

SUNDAY

Vikings +9½, Bucs +9, Cards +6½, Colts -7, Redskins -2, Lions +13½, Giants +3 ½, TEXANS +3 (best bet), Broncos -4.
