The absence of college football on a Saturday for the first time since mid August, meant college basketball all night on this TV.
Locally, there appeared UNLV-Nevada. On a channel near Saturn was the battle of Spokane between Washington and Gonzaga.
There was no mistaking that UNLV, who we had both as a 5-point first half dog and 12 for the game, dominated the Wolf Pack. Thus, for the first time since 1991, UNLV defeated a ranked team on the road. Think about it, 16 years! In one glorious night at Reno, Lon Kruger may have finally put UNLV back on the national scene.
Remember the name, Gaston Essengue (pronounced E-SEN-GAY). He’s going to be a star for the Rebels.
This could be the best hoop year ever for the state of Washington, which should see U-Dub, the Zags and Washington State all in the Big Dance. Gonzaga looks to be an Elite Eight at least.
Nor this week’s picks.
St. Mary’s (CA) at Nevada: Look for Reno to bounce back from a subpar effort against Rebs. NEV.
Fordham at Texas A&M: We see a letdown for the Aggies here after giving UCLA quite a battle on West Coast. Rams are feisty. FORDHAM.
Wisc-Mil at Wisconsin: The Badgers flex a bit here. WISKY
Xavier at Cincinnati: One of the better college hoop rivalries. Cincy better than we thought. CINCY.
Austin Peay at Memphis: After a series of toughies, an easy one for Calipari. MEMPHIS.
Purdue at Butler: The lines are catching up with Butler. Purdue is coming on. PURDUE.
Kentucky at Louisville: The Wildcats are down a notch from past powers. Louisville is young and improving. U OF L.
Elon at N. Dame: Irish unload on Fighting Christians. ND.
Gonzaga vs Georgia: Duluth isn’t quite Athens. GONZAGA.
Southern Miss at Alabama: The Tide have a bunch of great athletes, who can really hit the boards. Too much for USM to cope with here. ALABAMA.
