Tis the season
to go ‘bowling!’

Dec 19, 2006 6:20 AM

The Bowl Games are upon us. Please remember one of the principles I gave you last week of betting on the underdogs in the early games. I’ll attempt to give you sides and totals and pray you don’t go broke at least until January 1st when we can start betting some favorites.

Dec. 19 N. Illinois TCU -12 and 47 -13 and 46½ -8½ and 48

Northern Illinois has a real short tailback who often times gets hidden in the backfield by his offensive line and somehow reappears ten yards down field much to the surprise of the defense. I think he may disappear enough for his team to get the money.

Dec. 21 Oregon BYU -4 and 60 -5½ and 59 -3 and 60

If Oregon wants this victory straight up they are certainly capable of obtaining it. BYU has a great QB but it takes 22 to play and win.

Dec. 22 Troy Rice -5½ and 52½ -7 and 50½ -4 and 47½

I’d love to bet this game under but as an alumnus of Troy I can’t hope my boys don’t score. You however can be objective here and if the total goes to 55 it becomes a legitimate play.

Dec. 23 E. Carolina S. Florida -4 and 43 -3½ and 45 -3 and 44

A few years ago I bet against East Carolina every week because they were awful. However, they played very tough this year and shouldn’t be overlooked here.

Dec. 23 San Jose St New Mexico -3 and 48½ -5½ and 49½ -5 and 48

New Mexico is playing at home and they are a short favorite at -3. I’ll reluctantly go with the favorite here.

Dec. 24 Tulsa Utah -1½ and 50 -3 and 50½ Pick and 44

This is almost an under play and may well be by the 24th. Remember, the totals must be at least 8 points away from my number. Utah’s Most Valuable Player is coaching Florida now and he’s got his hands full there.

Dec. 24 Arizona St Hawaii -7½ and 74 -8 and 75 -10 and 64

Hawaii will try to prove that they are for real. Arizona State will have a great time but lose the game. I bet it under so I must be nuts. But I must trust my numbers. Let’s not go into that subject again; I caught a lot of heat last week from it.

Dec. 26 Mdle Ten St C Michigan -10 and 51 -11 and 51 -10 and 40

This game looks like a dead under according to the statistics. I know Central Michigan is the home team, but I’m not certain about the other team or where they are from. DAH I’m hoping Joe Theisman calls this game for ESPN so I can get a few new gems from him.

Again, I can’t emphasize enough the value of watching The Weather Channel. If you did you would have had a winner last Thursday night when Seattle played the 49ers. The total opened 43 and a half and went down to 37. Final score 49ers 24-14. Hey Diddle Diddle even us squares can get a middle!

NFL TIPS OF THE WEEK

Chiefs -4 ½ vs Raiders: I’ve been taught that you never kick a guy when he’s down, but this advice doesn’t apply to football betting. The Raiders have quit on Al Davis and Art Schell, and I’m going to kick them now, down or not.

Redskins +3 vs Rams: Washington is closing strong so as to save Joe Gibbs from going back full time to NASCAR. The new quarterback has done a good job, but Gibbs waited too long to play him. I’ll take the points.

Saints and Giants look like a good OVER this week, assuming that the weather is good.

Bears and Lions should go UNDER as a shutout of the Lions becomes probable. Bears don’t figure to need this game, as they’ve already clinched home field advantage.
