Time to roam Nevada’s
northern ‘pasture’

Feb 26, 2007 5:10 AM

Carol, it is time once again time to saddle up our poker ponies so that we can ride up to the north pasture for the Spring Poker Tournament at the Peppermill in Reno.

I am so happy that our old friend Mike Gainey has returned to the felt as the new poker room manager at the Peppermill.

We have fond memories of hosting "The Seniors" World Championship of Poker in many different casino locations with Mike in years past.

Remember, for many years we were with Mike at the Reno Hilton, which is now the Grand Sierra Resort & Casino.

Just last year we were with Mike again when we stopped by on our way back from The European Seniors at the Aviation Club in Paris, France, to visit with Mike and our Canadian poker playing friends at Niagara Falls.

At that time Mike was the director of poker operations at the Seneca Indian’s three casino locations in New York.

That sure was a wonderful poker happening at the beautiful new hotel, and from our room we had a view of the ever-changing Niagara Falls!

Mike arranged and I hosted "The Oklahoma Johnny" Hale Poker Classic Tournament with the Canadians during his creation of The American/Canada poker tournament.

I know you remember — I can still see the tears in yours and the Canadians’ eyes as our daughter Oklahoma Sarah sang both the national anthem of the USA and "Oh Canada" for our Canadian friends.

The Spring Poker Tournament at the Peppermill began last Friday (Feb. 23) before we can lope our ponies up there, but we will arrive on Wednesday and be ready to host a special Seniors WCOP No Limit Poker Tournament on Thursday, March 1.

Carol, we always hate to arrive late like that for an event, but we have both been invited to speak to The Sociology of Gambling class over at the University of Nevada (UNLV) on Tuesday.

Gosh, we sure have booked a lot of events this year and we want to invite all the poker players to pick out some of the dates and locations to come and play a few hands with us and our beautiful daughter Oklahoma Sarah.

We just returned from the South pasture — the Horseshoe in Tunica, Mississippi — where OK-Sarah hosted the ladies in the L.A.C.E. poker tournament, and I hosted "The Battle of The Ages!"

Here are the dates after Reno:

Sport of Kings at Hollywood Park on April 7

Spring Poker Round-up at Pendleton, Oregon on April 18-28

Opportunity Village Charity at Caesars in Las Vegas on May 12

Sign Design Theatre Charity at the Gold Coast in Las Vegas on May 28

The Orleans Open in Las Vegas in July

The WCOP/WSOP at the Rio in Las Vegas in July

There will be a return to the birthplace of The Seniors WCOP at Ocean’s 11 in Oceanside, California, plus a lot of other events we’ll me mentioning later.

OK-J Poker Tip of the Week

Here are just a few of the things my dad taught me about life, poker and business.

Don’t make the other poker players mad at you.

Don’t step on the little people.

Do the right thing every time.

Be a peacemaker.

Be good to the cook.

If you want to know a few other things my Daddy taught me, email me at [email protected]

Until next time remember to stay lucky.
