Banking on those 6-spots

Let’s look at a few 10-way-sixes this week! Ten-way-sixes are ever-popular. The most common way you see them played are as 15 numbers, grouped 3-3-3-3-3, but you can also play 10 numbers grouped 2-2-2-2-2, or nine numbers grouped 2-2-2-1-1-1.

An interesting question then is, "What is the best way to play a 10-way-six?"

Conventional keno wisdom tells us that the FEWER numbers we play, the better off we are, and the MORE chance we have of winning! This implies that the 10-way-six with the nine numbers should be the best to play, followed by the 10-spot deuce way ticket and finally the 15-spot ticket. Let’s look at the odds on the nine-spot ticket first:

10-way six, nine numbers, grouped 2-2-2-1-1-1:
Catch Chances of hitting
3/6 1 in 2.55
4/6 1 in 7.95
5/6 1 in 52.97
6/6 1 in 901.98

And the same for the 10-spot ticket, grouped 2-2-2-2-2:
Catch Chances of hitting
3/6 1 in 2.12
4/6 1 in 6.70
5/6 1 in 48.68
6/6 1 in 816.10

And finally, for 15 numbers, grouped 3-3-3-3-3:
Catch Chances of hitting
3/6 1 in 1.86
4/6 1 in 5.14
5/6 1 in 37.81
6/6 1 in 784.07

Well, as you can plainly see, the best 10-way-six to play if you are interested in hitting anything is the 15-spot ticket! In fact, if you play it, you will hit your solid six an average of 117 games sooner than on the nine-spot ticket! At a cost of $5 per game, that means you will hit the solid six about $580 sooner! For a ticket that pays $700 or so at most casinos, it makes sense to take whatever edge you can!

But, as Mr. Harvey says, "What is the rest of the story?"

You can’t, obviously, change the house advantage just by changing the ways on your tickets. Even though on the 15-spot ticket you will hit sooner, you will, over the long run, win just as much on the other two tickets. Why? Because the other two tickets give you more chances for multiple wins. For example, on the nine-spot ticket, if you hit two of the deuces and three of the kings, you will have hit three solid sixes, by only hitting seven numbers.

To hit three solid sixes on the 15-spot ticket, you would of course have to hit a solid nine! That’s how the probabilities even out. I still prefer to hit sooner, though, because, my bankroll is limited!
