Boeheim like
a fine ‘whine’

Boeheim is whining again. All in the world is right.

The Syracuse coaching icon has a case, as do Air Force, Kansas State, Drexel, Appalachian State and Missouri State. Picking 64 teams to go dancing is not a sweet science. A few teams get screwed every year.

So, Jimmy B should bring his lovely wife back to Vegas, have dinner at Fellini’s and relax.

As for the rest of us, Thursday starts the first of two huge days in college basketball. A full scale 16-game loser goes home shootout starting at 9 a.m. out here and ending near the midnight hour. Then we do 16 more all again Friday.

By the end of the weekend, we’re down to 16 teams and then the real scrutiny begins. Everyone has completed a grid and is no doubt rooting against everyone in the office. I went through my bracket sheet and came up with Florida, Kansas, Georgetown and Ohio State as my Final Four. I like Florida to beat Georgetown in a great final and cut the nets down as champs a second straight year.

Now for the best selections in the first round, hopefully,

Kentucky PK vs Villanova: Many believe this is the best first round game. I don’t. Tubby Smith is hearing it Big Blue and they have a point. A tired Nova made a nice comeback in loss to Georgetown. VILLANOVA.

Butler -2 vs Old Dominion: Beginning of the year, Butler. Not now. ODU.

Arkansas -1½ vs USC: Wrong team is favored. USC.

Maryland -7½ vs Davidson: Not nearly enough respect being shown for a hot Terrapins team. MARYLAND.

Texas -9½ vs N.Mexico St: Longhorns can name their score. TEXAS.

Indiana -1½ vs Gonzaga: The Zags can spend this week and next in the Pacific northwest if they keep winning. Getting points here is a bargain. GONZAGA.

Penn +14 vs Texas A&M: The Quakers fight the Law and Acie wins big. A&M.

Duke -7 vs VCU: The whole Commonwealth of Virginia is ready to take down Coach K and the Dukies. No Cameron Crazies in Buffalo. VCU.

Winthrop +4 vs N. Dame: Seems everyone is on Winthrop. Cinderellas are not supposed to be highly thought of. Irish can score in bunches. The Eagles are good, but they are going to have to match point for point. ND.

UNLV +1 vs Ga. Tech: The tourney committee really puts the screws to the Rebels. But the Rebs have mojo and we’re riding this bunch for awhile longer. UNLV.

Texas Tech +3 vs BC: Tech made it on Knight’s rep alone. Eagles made the Dance because they earned it. BC.

Belmont +16½ vs G’town: The Hoyas were more than 20 better than Pitt in the Big East final. Belmont is horse racing, not hoops. G’TOWN.

Va Tech -2½ vs Illinois: The Hokies beat UNC and Duke back to back. Illinois should be in the NIT. Va Tech.

Wash St -7 vs ORU: This is my sleeper. Oral Roberts has a quality big man, who can shoot. Wassu may come in flat and that will spell curtains. ORU.
