Table action heating up at the Palms

Whether you’re a beginning or experienced poker player, there are some nice things happening out at the Palms.

I know because I play there quite often. They have a great staff, the dealers are congenial and efficient and the games are attractive.

First of all, the Palms features a great environment. Because of the all the "happening" events, nightclubs, restaurants and so forth, there is always an abundance of interesting people breezing in and out of the poker room.

I don’t simply mean the so-called "beautiful people," although there is plenty of "eye candy" to feast upon at the Palms.

But you never know who you’re going to see. It’s not uncommon for a celebrity, such as Matt Damon or Chris Moneymaker to sit down in the poker room and play.

Who knows, you might even sit down in a game against a World Series of Poker bracelet winner — such as myself! — and take a shot at out-playing a professional.

The Palms has a couple of adjoining poker rooms — the regular room where you can always find a game ongoing, and a high-limit room. Anyone is welcome to play in either. The rooms, like most in town, are non-smoking, but the policy is relaxed from midnight to 8 a.m.

The featured games at the Palms are $2-$4 Limit Hold’em, $4-$8 with ½ kill Limit Hold’em, $1-$2 No Limit Hold’em and $2-$5 No Limit Hold’em.

The poker room also features some nice promotions for players. Currently ongoing are High Hand Jackpots and Bad Beat Jackpot, as well as an intriguing Diamonds are Forever promotion held every week.

The diamond flush promotion runs from Tuesday through Saturday, during which time five diamond flush qualifiers are drawn Wednesday through Sunday — each winner gets $100.

Poker players can also qualify to play in the Palms $1 million River King free roll tournament later this summer in July.

About 300 players are expected to compete for the top prize of $500,000. To qualify, a player needs to accumulate 300 hours in the poker room by June 30. To help with that task, the Palms is awarding double hours on Mondays and Tuesdays through the end of June.

Gold at the Coast

Poker players at the Gold Coast are salivating as the ongoing Royal Flush in Clubs progressive jackpot has ballooned to over $6,000. Also, the Diamond Royal jackpot has climbed to nearly $4,000.

Coming up later this month at the Gold Coast, the poker room is sponsoring several seats into the Sign Design charity event, hosted by Oklahoma Johnny Hale. Check out his column for details.
