An up-close look at Aristorcrat’s Penguin Pays

Players at Sunset Station have had a chance to sample the new Penguin Pays slots from Aristocrat.

The machine was submitted to the Nevada gaming testing laboratory last year, and is one of Aristocrat’s most popular games in other markets. The 5-reel video slot features a chilly penguin which heats up when two icebergs occur at the same time, triggering a second-screen bonus round.

"We are very excited about the trial," said Ken Jolly, Aristocrat’s vice president of sales, marketing and service. "We are particularly pleased that Station Casinos has agreed to host the field trial."

The trial at Sunset Station should last through April.

"It is not uncommon for field trials to commence prior to a notation on the Nevada gaming authorities’ agenda for consideration," he said. "On successful completion of the field trial, approval of Aristocrat’s product will be listed on the Nevada gaming authorities’ agenda for consideration."

Jolly said Aristocrat was on track to make Aristocrat games available to Nevada customers during the first half of this year.

"Penguin Pays" is Aristocrat’s most successful nickel slot machine. Adapted for quarter and dollar players, "Penguin Pays Deluxe" features the lovable skating "Penguin," a crowd favorite. Modifications to attract quarter and dollar players consist in reducing the max coin bet to either nine or 15 credits, accomplished by reducing the number of pay lines to three or five.

During the game’s feature, the "Penguin" skates to all locations on the screen, substituting for all symbols except scatters. "Penguin Pays Deluxe" has a variety of ways to win and ease in detecting line wins. In addition to the bonus feature, credits are won the traditional way by lining up matching symbols anywhere on adjacent reels — left to right and right to left. Or by getting the "iceberg," which substitutes for all symbols except the "whale," which pays as a Scatter win (meaning that to win, it only has to appear anywhere three times on adjacent reels — left to right, and right to left).

The new "Penguin Pays Deluxe" is a sure bet to follow in the original Penguin’s skating tracks.
