Ankiel’s fortitude makes baseball worth watching

GamingToday is about new you can bet on, not emotional stories out of Esquire. Yet even for the daily wiseguys like myself, you pull for a guy like Rick Ankiel even if the wager is sometimes against his St. Louis Cardinals.

Ankiel has gone from the next Steve Carlton to hopefully the next Stan Musial. At least in popularity, if not batting production.

Unseen wildness back in 2001 forced Ankiel to turn from pitching to hitting. His career, long considered done, is forming all over again. He has hit three homers in three games since being called up from the minors, where he hit over 30 HR this season.

Don’t look now, but Ankiel in right field may just be the right tonic to carry the Cardinals back into the pennant race again. Just like last year when they won it all against Detroit.

Speaking of winning, we humbly take a 5-2 week and hope the wonderful ride this season continues. 2 FOR TUESDAY is 9-0 the past 3 weeks. We don’t know why, but no complaints.

WEDNESDAY

D’Rays at Red Sox: Dice K against 1-8 Andy Sonnanstine. You may need 2½ run line to profit. RED SOX.

D’backs at Marlins: Florida starter Mitre is 0-3 vs Arizona in bad times. Now Zona is smoking hot. D’backs.

Giants at Braves: Hudson is money against ex-Brave Ortiz. BRAVES.

THURSDAY

Astros at Dodgers: Rodriguez is a road wreck. Lowe is OK. DoDgers.

Last week: 5-2.

Regular season: 89-57 (61%)
