Steer clear of ‘fixed’ games

Carol, I want to congratulate the winners of the trivia poker quiz — they were Connie and Michael and they will be awarded with The Seniors WCOP/Poker Players Hall of Fame live casino chips.

I want to thank all that participated in the quiz. I was surprised by some of the answers, but most of them picked you as the person that was on top of my list that I trusted the most in the world.

Now, back to the Red Games of Poker.

I do think that poker is an honorable game, more honorable than golf, football, horse racing, baseball, boxing, wrestling, tennis and even basketball!

Have you seen or read about the recent scandal where the referees are/were betting on the NBA games that they refereed in the NBA? And now we learn that betting on tennis caused a stir.

Well I knew that this was going on — the point shaving — and arranging the winner thirty odd years ago.

It is amazing how long it takes sometimes for the true facts to become public!

Way back over 30 years ago the bookies would not put up the line until 30 minutes or so before game time in the NBA, and then sometimes they would put a circle around the number, limiting the amount that you could bet on that game.

I played a little poker with Wilt Chamberlain, and when I stood by him I would come up to about the navel in his stomach! I remember once I asked him, "Wilt, who is your choice to win tonight?"

His response was, "Johnny, I don’t know but I used to know!"

In the early days of Monday night football I made a bet with my bookie that for the whole season, the score at halftime would never be more than eleven points difference.

The reason for this was that Monday night football was trying to gain an audience and their competitor was the Monday night movie.

Monday night football was not fixed in my opinion, except the referees had instructions to keep the game close, at least until half time so the NFL would not lose their audience to the Monday Night Movie.

So the upshot was if you didn’t bet the dog on Monday night football, like Dandy Don would say, "Turn out the lights, the party’s over."

So the referees were given instructions to keep the score close so that the audience would not turn the game off or switch the dial over to watch the movie.

It was just showmanship, like it was in wrestling and many other sports.

Poker is also a game and very few of the players who are playing limit poker for stakes lower that $10 and $20 expect to win. The poker players are only playing for recreation and social interaction with the players.

If you are a wagering person, the best place to gamble is to play poker!

If you are playing in a game of poker for stakes less that $10 and $20 limit betting, it is very rare that you will ever be cheated!

Why? Because as Willie Sutton (the infamous bank robber) said when asked why did you rob the banks?

Willie’s answer was, "Because that’s where the money is."

The same is true of the professional cheats in poker, they go to the higher limit games because that’s where the money is.

OK-J Poker Tip of the Week

If you are playing in a private game and the players are most of the time the same players, and among these players, one, two or three of the same players always seem to win, and they always seem to sit in the same seats, your game is probably a very Red poker game.

Keep records for a few weeks and if the same three players win each time, even if this is not a Red poker game, you should quit playing there because you are getting cheated or the game is unlucky for you.

So quit and find another game.

Until next time remember to stay lucky.
