We’re back for another session of College 101. Our Gatorade is in the fridge and an opening week of picks is ready to be digested.
Good luck all, especially me because I put my small amount of money behind the choices. For this first week, Nice of the NCAA to start the season on my birthday.
Thursday, Aug. 30
Tulsa -3½ at UL-Monroe: The host Warhawks were 8-3 ATS, one of the best in Division I. Tulsa may be thinking about its home opener next week with BYU. MONROE.
Utah +7 at Oregon St: Utes carry over a 5-0 ATS run and get 2005 starting QB Brian Johnson back from medical redshirt. The Beavers are without top Pac 10 WR Sammie Stroughter. UTAH.
Friday, Aug. 31
Wash +3 at Syracuse: Both teams face brutal schedules, so winning the opener is huge. The Orange were 8-4 ATS, despite a 4-8 record. Huskies 0-5 SU, 1-4 ATS in last five openers. CUSE.
Saturday, Sept. 1
Marshall +19 at Miami, F: New regime begins with a bang at the Orange Bowl. Bad analogy. Canes move to Dolphins Stadium next season. MIAMI.
Tennessee +6½ at Cal: The Golden Bears have been waiting an entire year to avenge the early blowout in Knoxville. Careful what you wish for. QB Ainge will make this one interesting. TENN.
Nevada +21 at Nebraska: No respect being shown for UNR, whose 11-2 ATS mark led the nation. Nebraska will win, but it won’t be easy. NEVADA.
UCLA -16½ at Stanford: The Cardinal could be dangerous in this early Pac 10 home opener. Bruins figure to have best team yet under Dorrell, but too many points to cover right now. STANFORD.
Illinois +5½ vs Missouri: The St. Louis site favors Missouri. Both teams are on the rise, but the Tigers can play with OU and Texas this year. MIZZOU.
Monday, Sept. 3FSU -3 at Clemson: Noles won’t lose Bowden Bowl three straight years. FLORIDA ST.
