I must confess not to remember
which ESPN paid know-nuthin’ claimed that the top 10 would go upset-free last
week. Thanks to Kentucky and Oregon State for proving again why we hit the mute
The only certainty about this season’s incredible college football package is to expect the unexpected. Appalachian State, Stanford beating USC as a 40-point dog, South Florida looking absolutely unbeatable against anyone in Tampa.
Even Buffalo and Temple are covering. Rags to riches to rags on a weekly basis. Give Michigan less than a touchdown and they take Purdue to the woodshed at the Big House in its best effort of the season.
Southern Cal lost much of its swagger at Stanford last week and is one of the bunch after pulling a late escape against Arizona. Notre Dame is now a cover machine! Reality, BC beat them again in South Bend by an impressive 13!
When I started out 2-15 after 17 games, I realized it was time to step back and acknowledge that what happens weekly in college football is why I watch and enjoy.
Now for this week.
Thursday, Oct. 18:
USF -3 at Rutgers: Here is the big test for South Florida. Out of that wild Raymond Jaynes beehive, the Bulls have to show the heart of a champ on the road. Stepping into Rutgers, will be one tough assignment. RUTGERS.
Friday, Oct. 19Louisville -3½ at UConn: This has letdown and upset written all over it. UCONN.
Saturday, Oct. 20
Buffalo +4½ at Syracuse: The Orange has been whacked at home the past two weeks by West Virginia and Rutgers. Turner Gill is making nice strides with his young Bulls. BUFFALO.
C. Mich +16½ at Clemson: No way Clemson is up for this one. CMU definitely will be and can score points. CMU.
N.Illinois +23½ at Wisconsin: How about the Badgers getting undressed at Penn State. Do I hear Appalachian State? N. ILLINOIS.
Arkansas -5 at Ole Miss: The Hogs blanked until the fourth quarter at home against Auburn with McFadden and then lose 9-7 on a late field goal. Houston Nutt is about to be out a job. OLE MISS.
Wyoming +3 at Air Force: The Falcons just keep rolling along and should be fine at home. AIR FORCE.
Tennessee +1 at Alabama: The Vols are still a player in the suddenly volatile SEC. On the road, we like our chances. TENN
Mich St +17 at Ohio St: Everyone is waiting for Ohio State to be tested. Well, the Buckeyes have been lights out since the second half at Washington. Spartans always run hot and cold. OHIO ST.
NC State +4 at E.Carolina: A lot of history in this one. All the ACC teams used to blackball ECU. Well, the Pirates have long memories and Skip Holtz had them right there with West Virginia. ECU.
Iowa +7 at Purdue: The Hawkeyes had just enough to upset Illinois in Iowa City, but managed just 10 points. The Boilers will be hot after what happened in Ann Arbor. PURDUE.
Colorado St +2½ at UNLV: Hey, the Rebels covered. Could happen again at home. The Rams are not in BYU’s class UNLV.
