Oct 22, 2007 4:04 AM

Legendary casino pioneer Jackie Gaughan will be celebrating his 87th birthday on Wednesday, Oct. 24, with a champagne toast among friends and guests of the El Cortez Hotel & Casino. A champagne toast by Gaughan in the historic property’s lounge will kick off the festivities at 2 p.m. Friends and guests are encouraged to sign a four-foot by four-foot sized birthday card wishing Gaughan birthday greetings.

During his illustrious Las Vegas career, Gaughan has owned and/or operated the Boulder Club, Flamingo, Showboat, El Cortez, Union Plaza, Golden Nugget, Las Vegas Club, Gold Spike and Western Hotel. Gaughan still owns downtown’s El Cortez that he purchased in 1961. The El Cortez is currently undergoing $20M worth of renovations.

Gaming mogul, Steve Wynn credits Gaughan with having helped him get his start at the Golden Nugget. Early in his career, Gaughan is said to have created the first "Fun Book," offering coupons and promotions. Gaughan can still be spotted still playing at an El Cortez poker table.

Join in the free cake and champagne celebration at the El Cortez from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24.
