W. Virginia business booms

Ted Arneault, president and CEO of MTR Gaming Group Inc. (MNTG) fought hard to get the gaming regulators in West Virginia to permit his racino in Chester to expand into a full-fledged casino.

Now the fruits of those efforts are being harvested. Although the table games at Mountaineer Race track & Gaming Resort have only been in operation for two weeks, the property already has benefited from the changeover.

Slot play at the track has surged 13.56% compared to the same period last year and management expects the improvement to continue.

"What’s indicative of that," says track spokeswoman Tamara Cronin, "is the fact that this has happened without any marketing. Many people may not even be aware we have the poker tables yet."

This is only the beginning, she noted, with additional tables and games to be added to the current gaming mix.
