Keep a close eye out for games involving New Jersey Tech and North Florida. They were a combined 0-20 starting the week and ranked 340 and 341 respectively in the Sagarins.
I didn’t think you could go that high!
Anyway, back to reality. Here’s an early Final Four, courtesy of Mike Seba, college basketball oddsmaker and analyst at Las Vegas Sports Consultants.
"North Carolina, Kansas, Memphis and UCLA stand out," Seba said. "Then there is a dropoff to Duke."
Looking for futures bets? Seba recommends Clemson and West Virginia.
"At 100/1 you can’t go wrong with Clemson, which has great athletic ability. West Virginia has a heck of a team with Bobby Huggins coaching. They have really surprised me."
Right now, according to Seba, the best conferences are in this order: Pac 10, Big 12, ACC, Big East and SEC.
"The ACC and SEC are down from past years," Seba said. "A conference that is on the rise is the Mountain West with BYU the class of the league. "UNLV is playing surprisingly well and Utah is better than expected. New Mexico is also playing very well as is San Diego State."
As we look forward to conference play, here’s this week’s playlist.
Wednesday, Dec. 26
Morehead St at Louisville: Morehead State lost by 32 to Oklahoma and 29 to Houston. Louisville has been hit hard by injuries, but should get well here. LOUISVILLE.
Thursday, Dec. 27
New Mexico at Hawaii: The visiting Lobos are 8-2 ATS, including a 29-point win over Hawaii in Albuquerque. However, New Mexico is only 1-2 on the road and Hawaii did give Illinois a fight at home. We’ll take the points. HAWAII.
Friday, Dec. 28
Marist at St. John’s: Marist is 6-5 against a pretty tough schedule that included Houston, UMass and Miami, Fla. St. John’s is streaky — win four, lose three, win one. MARIST.
Saturday, Dec. 29
San Diego at Kentucky: SD was 7-3 ATS including six straight. Now Kentucky is College 101’s whipping boy. Another potentially easy game turns difficult. SAN DIEGO.
Tennessee at Gonzaga: The Vols are 11-1 and off a major win at Xavier. Gonzaga is one of the toughest places for opponents to win. The Zags duck nobody, but may come up short here. TENN.
Oklahoma at W.Virginia: The Sooners have won and covered their last four games, but now have to venture outside Norman. West Virginia’s only loss was only by 2 to Tennessee. W.VIRGINIA.
Yale at Kansas: Yale actually covered against both Stanford and UMass, but did lose by 34 to UCLA. Kansas should win by at least 30, but that may not be enough. YALE.
Sunday, Dec. 30
Minnesota at UNLV: The Golden Gophers are 7-1 under former Kentucky coach Tubby Smith, but the schedule is full of cupcakes. The one true test, Florida State, Minny flunked by 14. UNLV showed rust in a close loss to Arizona. Not this time. UNLV.
Monday, Dec. 31
Kansas St at Xavier: Believe it or not, this is the first genuine road for K-State this season. Xavier failed to cover against Arizona State and Tennessee. Time for a bounce back. XAVIER.
