For want of a pair of designer jeans, a jackpot is hit!

Oddly, having a high-maintenance girlfriend paid off big-time for a New York man last week, as he hit a $780,000 jackpot at the Borgata hotel/casino while waiting for the gift shop to open so he could buy his lady a pair of $149 designer jeans.

Sammy Zabib came to the Borgata a week earlier, and his girlfriend was upset because he didn’t get her a pair of "Seven for all Mankind" jeans that she wanted after seeing them in the Whim gift shop, said Congetta Marino, the slot-machine service associate who verified the jackpot.

"They had a confrontation all the way home," Marino said.

And apparently for the rest of the week, as well.

Zabib arrived at the Borgata at 8 a.m. to buy the pricey pants, only to find that Whim did not open for another two hours. So Zabib decided to amuse himself by playing a 2-cent Brazilian Slingo progressive slot machine while he waited.

Zabib had been playing about 40 minutes — with a photograph of the coveted jeans in his pocket so he wouldn’t foul up again — at the maximum bet of 200 credits ($4), when the machine "stopped working."

Marino said she was monitoring her area of the casino floor when a player pulled her aside and said, "Look, I won a jackpot, but I don’t know what I won."

She informed him he won the top jackpot of $780,000.

Zabib got very excited and called his girlfriend to tell her the good news, Marino said. He handed her his cell phone so she could get the woman to calm down.

"She was driving to work, so I asked her to pull over to the side of the road for safety," Marino said.

While waiting for the winner to get paid, Marino said she struck up a conversation with Zabib and learned that he had come to the Borgata to buy the jeans for his girlfriend.

"I don’t know much about them," said Zabib, who manages a fleet of limousines in New York. "They look like normal jeans.

"She wasn’t mad anymore," after she learned of his big win, he said with a laugh. "She’s waiting for me at home now."

When Whim opened, Zabib bought the pricey jeans and some clothes for his 11-year-old daughter.

And it seems like Zabib will further indulge his girlfriend in the style to which she would like to become accustomed.

Zabib told her he plans to buy his lady a Mercedes, Marino said.

"I think they’re going to get engaged," she joked.
