by Mark Mayer | The New York Giants may have won the Super Bowl, but New England continues to gain the most respect. The Las Vegas Hilton released its annual preseason projected NFL win totals this week with the Patriots on the top of list at 12 – four less than they compiled during a perfect 16-0 regular season led by MVP quarterback Tom Brady. Last year, the Pats had a projected win total of 11½.
Meanwhile the NFL champion Giants are at 8½, just slightly higher than last year’s 8-win projected total. This season the G-men are outranked by six teams (Patriots, Colts, Cowboys, Chargers, Jaguars and Steelers) and on par with the Saints, Eagles, Vikings and Packers.
The Atlanta Falcons are projected to have the worst team in the NFL with a victory of total 4½, down from 7½ the previous year. The Dolphins and Chiefs are next lowest at 5½ apiece.
Here is last year’s list of teams either going over or under the Hilton’s projected win totals.
OVER (18): New England, San Diego, Indianapolis, Dallas, Seattle, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, NY Giants, Green Bay, Washington, Arizona, Tennessee, Tampa Bay, Houston, Minnesota, Buffalo, Detroit, Cleveland.
UNDER (14): Chicago, Denver, Baltimore, Cincinnati, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Carolina, NY Jets, Kansas City, St. Louis, Atlanta, San Francisco, Miami, Oakland.
The Cleveland Browns, off a 10-6 campaign, were among the biggest risers with a projected total of 8, compared to last season’s 5½. The Falcons took the biggest plunge, down from last year’s expected 7½ wins. Miami was the biggest disappointment a year ago, going just 1-15 after having a projected win total of 7. Green Bay made the greatest improvement with a 13-3 season off a projected win total of 7½.
