by Kevin Stott | Austria at Croatia (-½, +104, 2½u -120 The Palms) (9 a.m. PT, ESPN Classic/ESPN Deportes): The Croatians are ranked 13th by Fifa while Austria – granted a berth here because they are a host nation – is ranked 101st -- the worst of all teams in the tournament.
Austria is also 80-1 (LV Hilton) to win this Euro 2008 while Croatia is listed at 12-1. So let’s let the odds pick the winner here…and that’s probably CROATIA in this one. Another decent UNDER bet here if you can find it at 2½ somewhere. Prediction? Croatia 2, Croatia 0.
Germany (-1, -117, 2½o -125, The Palms) vs. Poland (11:45 a.m. PT, ESPN Classic/ESPN Deportes): This is my favorite selection in this first wave of games. Germany is listed as the 7-2 favorite at the LVH to win it all here and is ranked No. 5 by Fifa worldwide. Poland, ranked No. 27th by Fifa, was listed at 30-1 to win Euro 2008, the second-lowest odds of all. My feeling is Germany will want to get off to a good start in Group B and in the tourney and have the firepower to outscore Poland. This is the only game in the first wave where I really like the OVER as I am predicting a 3-1 Germany win. GERMANY (BEST BET) is definitely the side here and at -1, a tie would likely be the worst-case scenario. Late note, Germany is 11-0-4 lifetime against Poland.
