CHARLIE’S MOMENT: First-time starter was 6-1 in the morning line and took big action in this 2yo 4k maiden claimer. He showed high speed, while chasing the 7-5 chalk. Never had a chance at catching the runaway winner, but held on gamely for the place. This one won’t be a maiden for long and could be a good single in his next start.
GLIMMERING PETE: Ran a much better than looked race for low profile trainer Gary Sherlock. Got in tight and was checked hard just past midstretch and lost his best chance. Claimed out of this race by high-profile Doug O’Neill, who also retained part ownership. He must really like this guy, so give him a real big shot next time out. $$$
AMPY’S LIL GIRL: Really wanted to run as she was pulling the jock out of his saddle. Made a nice run down the lane, but could not get to the runaway winner. Did finish four lengths clear of the show horse. This girl can run and will be very tough in his second start.
FOREST PHANTOM: From off the rail on the turn came wide into the stretch and exploded to the front to win going away. This one will move up and repeat. May be heading back to the cushion track very soon. $$$
STREET LIGHTS: Broke through the gate before the start, which may have scared jockey Espinoza who rides tentative as it is. Once the gates opened, he took hold of a horse that wanted to run. Instead, the horse got stuck down on the inside and never really gave his guy a run. Maybe next time, but only with a jockey change.
WIREDFORTWOTWENTY: First time starter out of the Brian Koriner barn was very live in here at almost 23-1. He showed good speed, got to the front but was overtaken in the stretch. Ran well until the end in what was a very good try.
CRASH LANDING: Broke slow and was steadied hard. Moved up on the turn, continued along the rail and just did miss the place in a top notch effort. This guy is sitting on the maiden breaker and it should come in his next start. $$$
LUCKY MAMA: Just another poor ride by jockey Espinoza as he got left at the gate, then got in tight leaving the bend, came wide into the stretch to just miss by a head as much the best.
GOLDEN GATE FIELDS
CASSIE’S MARK: Ran a much better than looked race, while running a strong fourth. Missed winning by less than a length. Look for new connections to get the win next out.
LITTLE BUG: Had no shot at the runaway winner, but loves this turf course. Will get there next time if she has some pace to run at. $$$
LIKE RUNNING WATER: In from Hollywood Park off the Martin claim. Looked real good in this spot and the 9-5 price seemed a bargain. A troubled trip cost him the race losing by a half-length to Starcast ridden by Russell Baze, who got a perfect trip.
PRE HEAT: Made a huge late run after being far back in this 5½-furlong sprint. Look for him to find the winner’s circle next time out going 6f. $$$
ESOTERIC THINKER: I really liked this guy last time out, but he got untracked too late. Looks ready for a huge effort at what will be a big price. Longshot special.
I’M A GAMBLER: Got shuffled back when caught down on the rail. Made a run to get the lead, but just did fail to hold.
HAPPY ZONE: Has a big closing kick on the grass, if able to find a race with a lot of front speed he could pop at boxcars. $$$
