by Mark Mayer | When Tiger Woods does not play, tournament odds in Vegas often reach double-digits. So it is in this weeks PGA Tour stop at Bethesda, Maryland for the AT&T National. Jim Furyk is the pre-tourney favorite at 12-1, according to the latest odds at the Las Vegas Hilton SuperBook. Hunter Mahan and Mike Weir are next best at 20-1, but a sleeper pick in the event could be 25-1 rookie Anthony Kim.
The 23-year-old native of Los Angeles, was hailed as a future challenger to Woods after winning the Wachovia Open at Charlotte back in May by five shots over former British Open champion Ben Curtis. Other top contenders at the AT&T include Stuart Appleby (25-1), K.J. Choi (30-1), Aaron Baddeley (30-1), Camilo Villegas (30-1) and current Masters champion Trevor Immelman (30-1).
Notables in the longshot category are U.S. Open runnerup Rocco Mediate (50-1), Fred Couples (50-1), Davis Love II (60-1), former UNLV star Ryan Moore (60-1) and Charles Howell III (80-1). Another ex-Rebels golfer Chris Riley (150-1) is the longest shot on the Hiltons board.
The AT&T along with next weeks John Deere Classic (held in Silvis, Illinois) are considered tuneups for the British Open, slated for July 17-20 at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England. Ernie Els and Sergio Garcia are the Open co-favorites at 12-1, while Phil Mickelson is 15-1. All three are skipping the AT&T.
