San Antonio Silver Stars at Los Angeles Sparks: Los Angeles should be favored by a handful of points in this one, but the way they have been playing lately – back-to-back 18-point losses – it’s hard to get behind them even with Candace Parker and Lisa Leslie on the roster. The Sparks (12-8, 10-10 ATS) lost in the lone meeting between these two teams in San Antonio, 77-75. At home, LA has been no bargain as of late, losing outright to Washington (77-74, OT), New York (89-78) and Minnesota (88-70) back-to-back-to-back earlier this month in games it was all decent to heavy favorites in.
San Antonio, on the other hand, has been playing great basketball lately, winning a franchise record-tying seven straight heading into tonight’s game at the Staples Center in Lipstick City after Saturday’s night’s comeback win over the expansion Atlanta Dream. Becky Hammon is the Silver Stars key player, and with her running the point, SA (WNBA best 15-6) can certainly hang with the Sparks, Mercury and Storm in the West race this season, where they have surprised all and now sit in first place.
Two other key players in this matchup, LA’s Leslie and SA’s Sophia Young, seem to be heading in opposite directions. After scoring in double digits in 17 of the first 18 games, the Sparks center failed to reach that mark in the last two, going 5-for-20 from the field while Young has scored 20+ in six of her last seven games.
Toss in the fact that the Silver Stars have beaten LA four straight times now and it’s easy to handicap this one. The question though, do you take the points or risk taking the underdog on the money line (if you can find it)? SILVER STARS.
