Mercury -3½ vs Silver Stars (174)
This will rock GT writer Kevin Stott’s world, but we venture into the WNBA with baseball’s All-Star Game dominating Tuesday’s scene and already covered in this week’s newspaper issue. The San Antonio-Phoenix matchup is on ESPN2 if you want to check it out during All-Star commercial breaks. And, it’s basically the only other betting action going on in American sports.
As to the game, it’s a rematch of last year’s playoffs when Phoenix eliminated the Silver Stars. This season, the tables have turned. San Antonio owns the league’s best record at 15-7, having seen a seven-game win streak end last night in Los Angeles. The Mercury are 9-11 and 1-4 in their last five. The game showcases two of the league’s best in reigning WNBA Western Player of the Week Becky Hammon (San Antonio) and ex-UConn standout Diana Taurasi (Phoenix). This is the first time San Antonio has played back-to-back games so the fatigue factor could benefit Phoenix, one of the league’s top scoring teams and idle since Saturday. MERCURY.
