by GT Staff | The football contest of all football contests, the Las Vegas Hilton’s SuperContest, is now taking entries for the upcoming 2008 NFL season.

Entry fee for Jay Kornegay & Co.’s annual Battle of the Big Boys is $1,500 and starting this season, contestants may submit up to two entries. Proxy entries for those who live outside of Nevada are permitted and the deadline for entry into the SuperContest is Friday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. PDT.

Participants make five weekly selections against the spread – no totals – for the entire 17 weeks of the NFL’s regular season.

Last year, 342 entered the contest which pays out to the 20 top finishers and gives 100 percent payback of all contestants entry fees.

Ptshervj/Gaffney – Michael Handzelek (Pointshaver) and Joe Gaffney of Mocanaqua, Pennsylvania and New York City respectively – won the SuperContest in a tiebreaker.

The duo was tied at 55 points with eventual second-place finisher Blondie89103. The tiebreaker was the record for the last three weeks of the regular season and Ptshervj/Gaffney (10-5) edged out Blondie89103 (9-6) by one slim point and netted the $205,200 top prize. Second place finisher Blondie89103 took home $85,000.

Handzelek and Gaffney, who went 55-30 (65%) in the contest in their first year participating in the granddaddy of all football contests, told GamingToday they would be back to try and defend their title in 2008.

The contest also is again offering a $10,000 early sign-up bonus. Contestants entering before 4 p.m. PDT on Monday, Sept. 1 will be eligible to compete in a three-week (NFL Weeks 15-16-17) Mini-Contest (same scoring system) in which the winner will take home $10,000. This $10,000 will be paid by the SuperBook and will not come out of the contestants entry fees.

Also offered is a $10,000 aggregate bonus to the entry that correctly picks 67% over the season. If more than one entry reaches that mark, the prize money will be split. Again, this prize does not come from the contestants’ entry fee pool.

Out-of-state readers interested in getting a proxy sent to them can log on to www.thespread.com for more information.
