MONARCHOS, THE FORGOTTEN HORSE, NOW REMEMBERED

Monarchos, the Florida Derby winner, is the comeback horse of the year, winning the 127th running of the Kentucky Derby Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Ky.

The winner went off at 10-1 and paid $23. Monarchos, ridden by jockey Jorge Chavez, won by 4¾ lengths.

Monarchos also ran the second-fastest Derby in 1:59.97, second only to Secretariat’s 1973 performance.

Invisible Ink, who went off at 55-1, placed and paid $55.80. The exacta with Invisible Ink paid $1,229.

Congaree’s show finish paid $7.20. The trifecta paid $12,238.40. The $1 supertrifecta paid $62,986.

The post-time favorite Point Given (9-5), finished fifth.

The next leg of the Triple Crown is May 19 with the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore. The last leg is at the Belmont Stakes June 9.
