by Mark Mayer | Curlin heads the list of horses that could qualify for the 1¼-mile Breeders Cup Classic set for Oct. 25 at Santa Anita, California. Wynn Las Vegas lists Curlin as the 3-1 favorite with Big Brown second lowest on the board at 5-1. Curlin is a leading candidate for Horse of the Year honors, although he lost his last race on turf to 2006 Breeders Cup Turf champ Red Rocks back on July 12.
Big Brown was trying to become the first horse in 30 years to win the Triple Crown, but his breakdown at the Belmont has thrown his future up in the air. Big Brown was scheduled to race as the 1-2 morning line favorite in the $1 million Haskell Invitational this Sunday at Monmouth Park in New Jersey.
The Santa Anita track is artificial turf, a surface neither Curlin or Big Brown have ever raced. Other top horses on the Wynn board for the Classic include Casino Drive at 6-1, Colonel John at 10-1, Harlem Rocker and Tiago at 12-1, Henrythenavigator at 15-1 along with Georgie Boy, Pyro, Well Armed, Champs Elysees and Behindthebar all at 20-1.
In the Breeders Cup Sprint over six furlongs, Street Boss is the early 2-1 favorite at Wynn. Close behind is Benny The Bull at 3-1, followed by Midnight Lute at 6-1, Lucky Island at 7-1 and a group at 12-1 that includes Commentator, Fabulous Strike, In Summation and J Be K.
Magnificience and Indian Blessing are the current 5-1 co-favorites for the six-furlong Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Dream Rush is next at 6-1, followed by Ariege at 7-1, Ventura at 8-1, Diamond Diva and Tiz Elemental at 10-1 and Storm Mesa at 12-1.
Zenyatta is the 2-1 favorite for the 1 1/8-mile Ladies Classic. Ginger Punch is next at 3-1 followed by Music Note at 4-1, Hystericalady at 7-1, Proud Spell, Zaftig and Tough Tizs Sis each at 10-1. Storm Mesa and Country Star are each 15-1.
The longest race of the Breeders Cup is the 1 3/8-mile Filly & Mare Turf with Precious Kitten the early favorite at 7-1. At 10-1 are Wait A While, Black Mamba, Pure Clan and Ventura, who is also listed at Wynn among the candidates for the Filly & Mare Sprint. Other possible contenders include Peeping Fawn at 12-1 along with Mauralakana and Dynaforce each at 15-1,
