Johnson, Mussina reliable as ever

From the Bullpen by Mark Mayer | Earlier in the season we thought it may be time for Randy Johnson and Mike Mussina to head into the future Hall of Fame sunset. Now we don’t.

Johnson, who turns 45 on Sept. 10, has not seen Arizona fall with him on the mound since an 8-6 loss to Milwaukee on July 1. Since then, Arizona is 5-0 behind the Big Unit.

Mussina was called out by Hank Steinbrenner after the Yankees went 1-3 in his first three outings. Since then, the Yanks are 11-6 with 39-year-old righty, who put a small dent into the LA Angels onslaught with an 8-2 win last Saturday. Mussina’s overall record: 14-7 with a 3.44 ERA.

You may have noticed a rash of under streaks. Tampa Bay is 7-1 to the under in its last eight, Kansas City is 9-1-1 to the under in its last 11, the entire San Francisco-San Diego series went under and three of the four in the Arizona-LA matchup fell below the posted total. Yes, even with Manny!

By the way, Boston won its first three games with Jason Bay.
