Horse contests with no talk of Favre!

Getting Rich with Saber by Richard Saber |

This past week if you were a horse player, there were a smorgasbord of contests to choose from.

If looking to invest $1, you could motor down to North Las Vegas and sign up for the Jerry’s Nugget "Pick Your Best 5" race contest every Saturday at Del Mar. With a player’s card, you can get two entries and a third one free.

This past week our Managing Editor David Stratton just happened to be in North Las Vegas playing a few hands of video keno and decided to take a shot. Not only did he win at video keno, but he also took first place in the Del Mar contest and picked up a cool $400 for his $10 entry fee.

At Palace Station, it was a $40 entry fee for another qualifier for the big contest at Red Rock. One of my favorite people and a very sharp handicapper Lauren Stitch hit the board as she rallied to pick up fourth-place money. Victor and the race book guys and gals did another bang up job.

The big contest was at Wynn Resort where, if you had $2,000 stashed away, an entry into the high roller event would have been worth a shot at the $150K at stake. There were 80 that had that $2K lying around.

"Last Race Lenny" (Buck Shaw) had me as his partner and we finished in 13th place, just missing the money by $6. I talked Lenny off an $18 winner so I took the blame for the loss, but Lenny took it in stride and wanted to know where we were going for dinner.

Doc, a regular at Wynn and one of the finest cardiologists around, finished second. At times, he was checking his own heart while sweating out a few photos. Doc is a great guy, who is as good a handicapper as he is a doctor. Well, maybe not, otherwise he would have finished first. Just kidding.

John Avello and his crack Wynn crew pulled off a first-class job especially on Friday when Saratoga got rained out a few races in the program and they had to switch tracks to Arlington Park. It was a very good week in Vegas with few signs of a slow down, thanks to us gamblers.

Do you hear that NFL and NBA?

Now it’s on to my Week 2 NFL preseason selections:

Thursday, Aug. 14

Steelers +3 vs Bills (32½) at Toronto: Buffalo has gone 0-4 ATS as a home chalk last four in preseason and we don’t see much scoring. STEELERS, UNDER

Friday, Aug. 15

Raiders +4 at Titans (34): The Raiders were 0-2 on the road last year. TITANS

Saturday, Aug. 16

Skins +3 at Jets (35): NY looked focused in big win last week. This will be the Skins third game in 14 days. JETS.

Vikes +2½ at Ravens (33): The Vikings have gone 3-1 ATS as a road dog in preseason and 3-0 ATS off a straight up loss. VIKINGS.

Dolphins +3½ at Jags (33): Miami looked so bad last week we will have to just bet against. JAGUARS.

Colts +1 at Falcons (36): Indy is just going through the motions, but did get a cover last week in a loss. Atlanta put in a top effort against the Jags and may be up for this game. FALCONS.

Chargers +1 at Rams (36½): Normally I would prefer the Rams in this spot as San Diego comes off trouncing of the Cowboys. However, I just can’t side with Rams who have gone 2-7 ATS in last 9. CHARGERS.

Texans +4 at Saints (36½): Houston is 4-1 ATS in last five as a preseason dog. TEXANS.

Cards +2½ at Chiefs (34½): Cards 0-5 SU and 1-4 ATS in their last six preseason games. CHIEFS.

Packers NL at 49ers (NT): Niners 5-1 SU and ATS at home in their last six preseason home games. 49ERS.

Cowboys +2 at Broncos (36½): Cows have now gone 0-3 on the road in preseason under Wade Phillips. Broncos are 5-2-1 off a straight up loss. BRONCOS.

Bears +3 at Seahawks (36): Chicago is 3-1 off a straight up loss. BEARS.

Sunday, Aug. 17

Patriots +1 at Bucs (34: The Pats have no interest until next week when they will send in all their guns. BUCS.

Monday, Aug. 18

Browns +3 at Giants (36): Cleveland is picked by a lot of experts to win the AFC North, but sure didn’t look like a division winner in loss at home to the Jets last week. Look for those Dawgs on ESPN to strut their stuff. BROWNS (BEST BET).

NOTE: I have no opinion on Panthers-Eagles or the Lions-Bengals games. I will just watch.
