'The Seniors' XV World Championship of Poker starts at Oceans Eleven

Aug 19, 2008 7:00 PM

Back in the Saddle by Johnny Hale | Carol, we’re soon headed to Oceanside, California to host "The Seniors" XV World Championship of Poker" at the world famous Oceans Eleven card room.

Oceanside, the birthplace of the Seniors WCOP, will be the host site when the event begins this Sunday at high noon. The buy-in will be $300 + $50. And, there will be one $50 re-buy for "The Seniors" Charities created with the generous help of poker players and the many wonderful casinos offering money and support.

The charity has been approved by the IRS for charitable causes and the contributions are tax deductible.

All poker players approved to play in the Oceans Eleven Card Room that will turn 50 on or before Jan. 1, 2009 will be invited to play in the tourney.

One of the rules for age qualification to play in a seniors’ event is similar to the way they age race horses. All race horses are born on the first of the year.

Just like my namesake, a horse named "Oklahoma Johnny" by a poker friend of mine. The horse will be 3 on Jan. 1 of 2009.

I will make "Oklahoma Johnny" an 8-5 favorite right now to win the Kentucky Derby next year. If it were legal I would book it, but you know we have the gaming commission to protect me from booking even my namesake.

When my daughter OK-Sarah was 10, she sang at the inaugural of "The Seniors" WCOP! I dressed her up in a Yankee Doodle Dandy costume with a big Uncle Sam hat.

The wonderful senior poker players filled her big hat full of money! Well, Sarah will be at Oceanside and will sing "The Gambler," prior to the start of the No-Limit tourney.

After Sarah sings, a few minutes will be set aside for the induction of two new poker players (Haig Kelegian and Bob Van Horne) into "The Seniors" World Championship Of Poker/ Poker Players Hall of Fame.

Both new inductees will be invited to come on in and make themselves at home in the Hall of Fame of "The Seniors." If you would like to visit the website of the Seniors’ Hall, the address is

There are many rooms at this site, which is a work in progress. Try the door to the Poker Players Hall of Fame! You will find all of the members listed there.

I created "The Seniors" WCOP many years ago along with its Poker Players Hall of Fame. Johnny Moss, "The Grand Old Man" of poker was the first inductee.

A part of history of "The Seniors" WCOP is that the inaugural event, as well as the first four, was held at the Oceanside Card Casino owned by Mr. Len Miller. Since then, events have been held each year in a number of different casinos.

The following is a list of casinos that have hosted "The Seniors" WCOP:

• Crystal Park, Fort McDowell, Hollywood Park, Palace Station, many Cruise ships including the QE2 & Freedom of the Seas.

 • Wildhorse, Seneca, Reno Hilton, Cherokee, Orleans, Venetian, Foxwoods, Aviation Club in Paris, Four Queens, Rio, Binions Horseshoe, Grand in Tunica.

 • Peppermill, Isle of Capri, Horseshoe in Tunica, Caesars Palace, Golden Nugget, Rio, Sam’s Town, Florida Clubs, Gold Coast, Sahara, Stratosphere, River Palms.

Watch for "The Seniors" WCOP/HOF cruise in late 2009. Many more of "The Seniors" WCOP events are planned for the future years.

OK-J Tip of the Week

Poker is a people game, therefore, be happy when playing or not. To help you remain calm and happy as you play, it is best if you understand poker, its players and the characteristics.

Moreover, you should have enough knowledge of the poker game and be wise enough not to look down or be critical in any way about how others play the game.
