Yankees -125 at Mariners (9½)
This is one website that doesn’t just ride favorites. Here’s a case in point. The Yankees hit Seattle virtually out of playoff consideration, trailing Boston by 8½ games for the Wild Card with just 21 left. The Yanks were down after dropping the final game of their must-win series at Tampa Bay and compounded the bleak picture by losing the opener last night to the Mariners.
For the second straight night the Yanks face a Seattle pitcher, who began the season in the bullpen. Ryan Rowland-Smith has been a nice surprise in a brutal year for the M’s, going 2-1 with a 1.77 ERA in his last three starts. The Yanks counter with perennial whipping boy Sidney Ponson, who has been torched (15.03 ERA) over his last three starts. Sir Sidney as a favorite is like an Oreo to milk. Delicious. MARINERS.
