Horses to Watch by Richard Saber |

Oak Tree
@ Santa Anita/Fairplex

GOBBLER’S KNOB: Angled to the inside after the start. Lost some ground when taken back, but split horses into the stretch and was angled back to the inside. Jockey Solis had this guy all over the track, but still managed to come on late and lose by less than a length.

TEN CHURROS: A private purchase by trainer Bob Baffert for owners Hal and Patti Earnhardt. This filly paid some big dividends winning the 100K Generous Portion. The Baffert stable started to heat up toward the end of the meet. He also won with Midshipman in the 250K Del Mar Futurity on closing day. Look for him to stay hot when Oak Tree opens Sept. 24.

SHARK CITY: First-time starter out of the Ed Moger Jr. barn was ultra-live in the 32K maiden claimer. He was just pulling the jock out of the saddle. Rosario took a tight hold, then came wide on the turn and five wide into the stretch. Tired late and finished fifth at almost 14-1 in what was a much better than looked effort. Give this guy a big shot at a price in next start. $$$

PLATA QUEMADA: 10K claimer had no shot at running down the lone speed in this race, but showed some heart finishing second. May be a good claim by trainer Koriner.

MALIBU CANYON: Really wanted to run, but jockey Tyler Baze was intent on taking a strong hold. He took him down on the inside, which was just where you did not want to be. When the horse wanted to be let loose, he had to check off heels leaving the second turn as there was no room. He switched out, but it was too late and just missed the place by a neck in what amounted to a stupid ride.

HUMIDITY: Long-time maiden finally got it done and in impressive style, winning going away by almost four lengths. I love it when these long-time maidens finally score. They will almost always come back and run another big race.

RICHER GEAR: Hadn’t been seen since last year at Oak Tree. He came back in this race with some good work and looked great on the track. Showed some good speed, while battling on tooth and nail on the front end but tired late. This race may have been a set up for Oak Tree. Look for the money run in about three weeks. $$$

ALPHA KITTEN: First-time starter hopped at the start and was dead last before she knew what had happened. Was taken four wide into the stretch and stormed down the lane while being shown the whip to win going away in a very impressive effort. This girl looks to have a ton of upside and is a must follow. $$$

GREY CHATELAINE: Was being stretched out for the first time and looked to be making a winning run only to be steadied hard when in tight leaving the second turn. She got going again and split rivals into the stretch. Came back to just miss the show and place. Next time she will get the job done with a clean trip.

PLAN FOR FUN: Ran good, was claimed by a low profile barn and then ran bad. He was re-claimed by Mullins out of this poor performance so look for a big-time rebound in his next start.

CAPTAIN QUICK: Was last seen at Hollywood back in June 2007 when going off at 2-1 against some very tough straight maidens. He was dismissed at the windows and went off at 23-1. Bobbled at the start and almost went to his knees. He recovered and shot up to contention, but weakened late. This guy has ability and just may pop at a big price.

STARDOM BOUND: Just broke her maiden in the 250K Del Mar Debutante when coming home like a freight train. Ran away from the field by better than four lengths. A star was born on this day as this girl may be heading to the BC 2yo filly championship, I am heading to Wynn and making a futures book bet.
