MLB races still need to be run

Sep 9, 2008 7:02 PM

Diamond's Gems by Sid Diamond | Before we get into football, letís not forget the baseball season is still winding down. Led by the National League, there remain six different teams vying for four playoffs spots. The Central Division appears to have won the Wild Card, with the Brewers having the inside track. In the other two divisions, any two of the four top teams has a chance at making the playoffs.

There remain about 20 games left, and both the NL East and NL west have great races. I canít separate the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, or the Phillies and Mets, and itís possible either winner may be declared at the end of the month, which is when the season ends. Itís almost even money that one of the two divisions will need a playoff game victory to advance. It doesnít get any better than that.

The American League has one disputed division, as Boston and Tampa Bay should win the AL east, with the loser getting the Wild Card. That leaves the White Sox and Twins to fight it out for the postseason, as the best team in baseball clinched its division more than a few months ago. I skipped the baseball totals last week, and got some flack for it, so Iíll give you a few for this week.

Dodgers at Padres: SD has proven to be the best under team in baseball, especially at home. Under.

Blue Jays at White Sox: I could probably hit one out in this ballpark, if I stood on 2nd base, but high flies go out here, so look and listen for Hawk to yell out "Put it on the board, yes!" Over.

Weekend goodies:

Giants at Padres: Frisco has even less run production than the Dodgers. Under.

Tigers at White Sox: all of the above and more as Tigers have equalized their runs scored by giving up more. Over.

Here are some highlights that occurred in the first football weekend:

If one does his homework, he would have benefited from hurricane Hannah, as those fields that were involved saw three out of four games. Additionally, all four dogs got the money. The Weather Channel is a wonderful thing!

A lot of huge college favorites got the money this week, but a word of caution, as the season wears on this wonít always be the case. If one lays large amounts of wood, heíll end up with a box of toothpicks.

Have you ever seen a running back tougher to bring down than Jacobs of the Giants? No wonder Tiki retired.

Nothing beats college football for last second excitement. Did you see the end of the BYU-Washington game? Wow!

How about the NFL with Carolina winning with no time left on the clock with a fourth down pass into the end zone? You got to love it!

On Friday Kansas visits South Florida. Both won last week, but USFís game was bruising, and they had to work very hard just to pull it out. Kansas won 29-0, and hardly worked up a sweat. Take the points.Kansas.

Iíve had two victories with Vandy, thanks to Dave, so Iíll go with them again, as theyíre only a one touchdown favorite over Rice, who gave up 42 points to Memphis last week. Vanderbilt.

Georgia finally meets somebody as they visit South Carolina. This should be over at the half, as Georgia goes on to bigger and better things. Georgia.

Take a shot early on the Jets -2Ĺ, and hope Brady canít play this game. His backup leaves much to be desired and they almost blew their game against a sub par KC team. Betting it under 39 may be a worthwhile parlay.

Steelers will handle the Browns as the Cowboys did and theyíre only laying 5 Ĺ .

Monday night shows the Eagles getting 7 in a high scoring game. Behind QB McNabb, they shouldnít be 7-point dogs to any team as long as heís healthy, which he is now. Eagles.

Have a great week!
