Talks delayed

By Ray Poirier | Efforts by the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe to initiate talks with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts were thwarted last week by the administration of Gov. Deval Patrick.

The Wampanoags, financed by developer Len Wolman and casino operator Sol Kerzner, have plans to build a tribal casino in Middleborough on land that they hope the federal government will place in trust for tribal use.

Patrick’s administration advised the tribe to continue its effort to get federal approval of the land trust before looking for talks with the state. It was noted that the state isn’t obligated to negotiate until the land trust application is approved.
