From Ann: Where can I find the optimum payouts for a casino machine and is there any casino that pays the same odds as a live game?

In general there is more variation from casino to casino in the payrates on live keno games than on the machine games. Keno payrates have always been competitive, with casinos jockeying for competitive advantage over each other with special payrates and gimmicks.

With keno machines the competition is not casino to casino (with several dozens of casinos competing) but machine manufacturer versus manufacturer (a half-dozen or less) so the variation you see on machine pay rates is based on the brand of machine.

Most of the time the same brand of machine will offer the same payout regardless of which casino you find it in. So if you find a brand of machine you like, look for that brand in the casino that you are playing in. If you can’t find them then ask. Maybe the casino management will get a clue and get some!

On most keno machines the payouts are straightforward and may be calculated using standard keno mathematics, so just buy any of the competent keno books on the market, read this column or join the keno internet group and you may inform yourself very easily. The keno group is at

Keno machines almost always have a higher percentage payout for the player than live keno, so your last question should really be are there any live games that pay as good as the machines? Probably not! But if one is found, we will be playing there and telling you about it!
