Leaders in 20 Connecticut towns sent a letter to the state’s congressional delegation last week to stop federal recognition of Indian tribes.

Now, 12 additional tribes are seeking federal recognition.

The towns claim that the opportunity to open a casino is the main reason that is driving them for recognition.

Currently, two state tribes (the Mashantucket Pequots and the Mohegans) have tribal status. Both operate massive casinos.
