OAK TREE at SANTA ANITA (opening day)

Note: 20 years ago there were very few things better than opening day at the Oak Tree meet, fall was in the air and great horses were getting ready to race on this storied track. It has lost a lot of luster, very few great horses and just not the same ambiance and now we will have a new surface, Pro Ride and no one really knows what to expect, so we will tread lightly the first week.

Race 1

Just another 2yo state bred race, this time it will be 2yo filles and the only way to approach this race is to look for those that have been stabled here and have some good works over this new surface and they are No. 3 Mark Up Tiny who has two sharp works for trainer Bob Baffert who looks to be loaded for bear this meet and No. 1 Heatology who has two good works over the surface. No. 7 Costa Marta will be the big chalk but he has been working at Hollywood. 1-3**-7

Race 2

No. 2 Honor Your Wager had a good work here on Sept 11 and looks ready to roll on the drop. No. 8 Sandita will be right there. 2**-8

Race 3

25k maiden claimers going 7f and this one really looks wide open. No. 6 Vital Force just may be the controlling speed in this race, if he can clear it could be over before the others know what happened. The others in the mix are No. 2 Quite The Man, No. 11 Royal Seal, No. 12 Unusual Smoke and No. 14 Untapped. 6*** with 1-11-12-14

Race 4

40k claimers going down the hill on this 6 ½ furlong turf course, remember the outside has the advantage in these down hill races as the make a right turn out of the gate. Looking at the outside No. 9 Don’t Ya Lovett looks to have the best shot as this 9yo has a win here at this distance. No. 6 Kewen ran his best race over this course and looks to be the one to beat. No. 3 Mt. Orient has never been off the board here on the grass and has a win and two seconds down the hill from three starts. 3**-6**-with 1-9

Race 5

This one is very evenly matched and may just call for a little dime super box with No. 1 Brooker, No. 5 Stand Tall who gets off the grass and has two works here, No. 6 Taxi Fleet who takes a big class drop for Hollendorfer, No. 9 Storm Machine who gets a great post and loves to win races. 1-5*-6-9***

Race 6

No. 1 Parko may be coming around for trainer Julio Canani, No. 5 Cherokee Artist has class and tries grass for the first time for a very sharp outfit. 1-5**

Race 7

This may be one of the better bets of the day as No. 1 Star Nicholas gets the cozy rail post in this flat mile race and also has two bullet works over the track and he is listed at 6/1 in the morning line. The highly thought of No. 6 Vulcan ran huge in his maiden breaker but will be overbet, we will try and beat him. No. 9 Evaluate is in top form and could surprise.

1***-6-9

Race 8

MORVICH HANDICAP GR111

Don’t like the inside very much but No. 1 Rebellion is very consistent winning seven of eighteen lifetime starts, No. 4 Get Funky is two for two on this 6 ½ furlong down hill course and won this race last year. No. 10 Tropic Storm gets a great post, has good early speed, this one looks very live. No. 12 Desert Code also has good early foot and also gets the best of the draw and has won three of four on this course. 1-4*-10**-12

Race 9

No. 2 Eisenheim looked great in his last start but failed as the 7/5 favorite and we must be very careful with the Sadler barn. No. 7 Concerto’s Thunder always looks good but is a hanger. No. 10 Cajun Gent ran huge in his first start back in January when running second against Two Step Salsa after a poor start, he has three good works over the track including a :58.4 best of 62 on Sept 10 and he attracts Gomez for the ride. No. 13 Star Time may be ready for a good effort as trainer Baffert scratched his stable mate.

2-7-10***-13

GOLDEN GATE FIELDS

Race 1

This one looks like a cold two horse race with No. 5 Spanish Ice and No. 6 Fashonita. No. 5 Ice showed a new dimension when closing for the maiden breaker. 5-6

Key Play

$10 Q 5-6 for $10

$10 win 5 for $10

Race 2

No. 2 Polish Charmer gets off the grass and looks well spotted for the maiden breaker. No. 6 Raising Suzzie 15/1 on the morning line gets a very hot jock and may be live. 2-6

Key Play

$4 double

1st 5-6

2nd 2-6 for $16

Race 3

No. 1 Whims And Fancies will get a good rail trip in this mile turf race, No. 4 Marenka has been facing much tougher and shows up here for Jerry Hollendorfer and Baze. No. 6 Awesome Girl will be flying late. 1-4-6

Race 4

No. 6 Mother Bronson gets a turn back in distance and blinkers, No. 8 Kristin’s Belle takes a big drop in class for Sherman. 6-8

Race 5

No. 2 Madame Hook likes it here and may get back to her winning ways. No. 5 Oh The Joy has two wins here and gets the hot Baze in the irons. No. 9 Sally Silk Sox will get the lead and at times can get very brave if left alone on the front end and will be a big price.

2-5-9

Race 6

No. 7 Tippetarius has run second in all of his fours starts, he could be the lone speed in here so today may be the day. NO. 7

Race 7

No. 1 Shadow Justice adds blinkers and goes from dirt to turf which is a .17% move for trainer Ward. No. 5 Seattle Delegate is one for one here at the Gate and two for two at this distance and on the grass, he has also won four of eight lifetime starts. 1-5

Race 8

No. 1 Voracious is just two for 17 at this 6f distance and will be overbet. No. 6 Man Law has run his best races here and may get a fast pace to put in his big closing kick and the price will be right. NO. 6

Key Play $10 win and place 6 for $20
