It’s not often you can predict a team being shut out, but this Utah State (1-3, SU) squad was blanked by BYU, 38-0 (4-0) in the last meeting in 2006, while the No. 8-ranked Cougars (177 PF-44 PA) are coming off back-to-back shutouts (UCLA, Wyoming). And if BYU doesn’t register the zero on defense, then 3 or 7 or 10 points may still work for the Cougars cover.
Most of the trends here point the way of the favorite. USU (93 PF-168 PA) is just 2-6-1 HD L2Y and 1-6 as a HD 7+ PTS OFF BB SU WINS. BYU is 3-1 ATS in the L4 in this series and won’t let up as they have a legitimate chance at a BCS Bowl run.
Cougars QB Max Hall (1,284 yards passing, 15 TDs) has two great targets in WRs Dennis Pitta (30 Rec, 443 Yds, 110.75 YPG) and Austin Collie (30/386) and RB Harvey Unga (91.5 YPG rush) can get the short yardage when needed. And phenom Hall gets protection like the president as BYU has still yet to yield a sack this season!
A great gambling angle here is to look at the FIRST HALF bet on BYU (-16½) as the offensive-minded (482.0 YPG Total Offense, #1 MWC) Cougars should have at least three TDs and a FG up by the break (24 pts minimum) and giving the Aggies a token TD makes them a 24-7 low-side estimate which should still cover at halftime. BYU averages 43 PPG while USU allows 42 so if BYU can get to 49, the cover should be easy. Can you say blowout? Prediction: BYU, 49-0. BYU -28. (BE$T BET)
