Horses to Watch by Richard Saber |

OAK TREE at SANTA ANITA

GOOCH’S DREAM: Was trying turf for the first time and stretching out in distance. He broke sharp and vied for the lead before backing off the pace while down on the rail. Off heels, he was blocked along the rail in midstretch. Did switch out for room, but it was too late. Next time! $$$

LAUNCHING PAD: Looked super in this spot, but really never got untracked in a very wide trip. Did make a belated little late run with no pressure applied. Let’s give this guy a big shot to redeem in his next start with his regular jock back on.

CAJUN GENT: Was bumped hard at the start then chased between horses while well off the rail. He angled in on the turn, but was taken back out into the stretch when off horses’ heels. Did split foes and got going again for the show dough in what was a troubled trip.

STAR NICHOLAS: I like these star horses and really loved this guy today. I got scared a little when he was steadied into the first turn, while under a stranglehold. Once clear, he put in a nice run and got up for a much easier than looked win with a lot left in the tank. Look for this guy to move up and repeat.

CHEROKEE ARTIST: Love this guy and he looked to be home on the front end. After inching away he jumped shadows. The jock must have thought he broke down as he dropped him out of the race. No mistake next time out. $$$

SHADOW OF ILLINOIS: Talk about shadows, this turf sprint specialist ran great out of the one hole in a very tough race. If he draws an outside post next time going down the hill, go to the windows and send it in.

SANDITA: Talk about a horrible trip, he looked the winner at the top of the stretch. Then he got crushed and dropped back to eighth. He did rally to just miss the place and show, but was moved up to second with a double DQ.

ZEPHANIAH: Hopped and threw his head in a very slow start and was off last. He made a wide run into the stretch and came on fast to just miss the place by the slimmest of nostrils. If he gets an outside draw next time, take a little plunge. $$$

NORTH FORK: Was best in here, but had to wait off heels when making a big run leaving the second turn. That delay cost him the race as surged late to miss by a nose.

GOLDEN GATE FIELDS

KISSED BY CLASS: Pressed the pace to the half-mile pole, but was boxed in on the rail through the second turn. Once clear, he made a final late run but could not run down the lone speed who had a perfect trip. $$$

MISSILE SMOKING: May have gotten away with one here as this guy won going away for 20K. He looked to be a good claim, but no one bit. If moved up in class, look for a repeat trip to the winner’s circle at what may be another good price. $$$
