MGM MIRAGE layoff rumor denied

by Ray Poirier | The rumor, as printed on the GamingToday website earlier Friday, that MGM MIRAGE Inc. had laid off 2,500 employees was totally untrue, according to an official of the company.

A source, considered credible by this newspaper, had called earlier to report the rumor. Efforts by GamingToday's staff to receive confirmation from MGM MIRAGE failed. Two gaming observers said they had not heard the rumor but that they would not be surprised because of the economic slowdown that had impacted the industry.

Following the website report of the unconfirmed rumor, Gordon Absher, vice president of public affairs for the company, said that not only was the rumor untrue but that there were "no layoffs" by MGM MIRAGE on Friday morning.

Absher asked that the story be corrected since the company was receiving a number of telephone calls relative to the rumor.
