NINE SQUARE OFF IN POKER CHAMPIONSHIP

Nine finalists will play for the top prize of $1.5 million in the World Series of Poker championship event, beginning at noon today at Binion’s Horseshoe.

Vying for the title of World Champion will be Henry K. Nowakowski, Carlos Mortensen, Phil Hellmuth, Mike Matusow, Phil S. Gordon, Stan Schrier, Dewey Tomko, Steve Riehle and John Harvey Inashima.

A total purse of $6 million is up for grabs. The finalists were pared down from an original field of 613.
