Chris Mortensen outlasted eight rivals in a marathon final day to capture the World Series of Poker championship event Friday at Binion’s Horseshoe.
Mortensen, formally of Madrid, Spain, filled a king-high straight on the last card of the last hand to top Dewey Tomko’s two pair.
The victory was worth $1.5 million for Mortensen, while Tomko took home a record $1.1 million for second place.
Other finalists who reached the final table include Phil Gordon, Henry Nowakowski, John Inashima, Stan Schrier, Mike Matason, Phil Hellmuth and Steve Riehle.
