AGA Communications awards winners announced

The 2008 Gaming Voice Awards, recognizing outstanding achievement in public relations, marketing and advertising and financial and corporate communications in the gaming industry, were announced at the AGA Communications Awards Presentation at the Global Gaming Expo’s Marketing Networking Luncheon on Wednesday in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Awards were presented in 15 categories and a panel of judges with expertise in advertising, public relations, Internet design, graphic arts and financial communications evaluated over 270 entries, the most in the eight-year history of the award program.

The AGA also honored Jack Leone with this year’s award for Lifetime Achievement in Gaming Communications. Leone, now vice president of corporate communications for Sierra Pacific Resources, represented legendary Las Vegas properties like Caesars Palace, MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay. His years in the casino industry were during a time of dramatic growth in which marketing and advertising were extremely critical components of revitalizing the Las Vegas Strip.

An equal number of awards were won by commercial and tribal casino companies – a first for the program – with each taking home seven awards.

The day’s biggest winner was Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc. which was victorious in four categories: Best Outdoor Advertisement – Single Piece, Best Outdoor Advertising Campaign, Best Print Advertisement – Single Piece and Best Public Affairs Campaign.

Notable in Harrah’s awards was the Best Print Advertisement which was the first foreign language (Chinese) entry to ever win an AGA Communications Award.

Two tribal casinos also won big with Mohegan Sun being honored with three Gaming Voice Awards for Best Direct-Mail Campaign, Best Broadcast Radio Campaign and Best Broadcast Television Advertisement. Sonoma County, California’s River Rock Casino also won two trophies for Best Website and Best Print Advertising Campaign.

Bally Technologies, Inc. represented the gaming equipment manufacturing sector well by winning the prize for Best Customer Publication for its Networked Floor of the Future. MGM MIRAGE and Ameristar Casinos both duplicated their wins from last year in the Best Annual Report and Best Employee Publication categories, respectively.

Barona Valley Ranch Resort and Casino garnered the top spot for Multi-format Advertising Campaign. Other winners include Potawatomi Bingo Casino, which received the award for Best Corporate Social Responsibility Publication, and the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino, which was the winner for Best Direct Mail campaign.
