Shakis euthanized after injuring leg in training

The winner of the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap in Saratoga in 2007 and 2008, Shakis, was euthanized today after suffering a serious leg injury after a workout at Hollywood Park. The horse reportedly broke his sesamoid and fractured his pastern after taking a bad step galloping after a half-mile workout on the main track where he ran a 49.20 (seconds).

Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, Shakis last raced on Oct. 25 in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita where he finished in 11th place. The horse was prepping at Hollywood Park for a start in the Grade 1 Citation Handicap next Friday.

The 8-year-old horse, who is out of the Nashwan mare Tawaaded, went 7-5-5 in 35 lifetime starts and had total career earnings of $860,532.
