by GT Staff | Falcons -1 vs Panthers (42½)
An important matchup in the NFC South where Carolina can establish a three-game lead over the surprising Falcons with a victory. Atlanta lost the first meeting 24-9 at Carolina in Week 4 as Panthers QB Jake Delhomme threw for a season-high 294 yards. Atlanta RB Michael Turner, third in the NFL in rushing with 971 yards, was held to just 42 in that loss and stellar rookie QB Matt Ryan threw for just 158.
Carolina is riding a four-game win streak thanks to a rushing attack that has averaged over 170 yards in the streak. The Panthers win with balance. RB DeAngelo Williams and Jonathon Stewart have combined for nearly 1300 yards and 10 TD’s, while WR Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad have 40 and 41 catches respectively. Muhammad had 147 yards against the Falcons. Plus, Carolina defensive end Julius Peppers is having a Pro Bowl season in the final year of his contract.
Atlanta may be coming back to earth after last week’s home loss to Denver and we like seeing an 8-2 team as an underdog. FALCONS.
