Hollywood Casino tries to make up for mistaken promotion

Looking to reward its best customers, Hollywood Casino in Pennsylvania gave a list of 1,000 people to a company that specializes in promotions. The favored clients were to get $100 in free slots play each week for five weeks beginning on Dec. 1.

Also, the promotion offered two free visits to the $14 buffet at the racino.

But things didn't go according to plan. Instead of 1,000 players, the promotions company sent the freebies out to 55,000 customers. If all recipients redeemed the free play, the company, Penn National Gaming Inc. (PENN) said, it would incur a cost of some $29 million.

Looking to ease the problem, the racino offered $100 in credits per customer and two buffet passes, if they are redeemed by Christmas.

A spokesman explained, "Rather than say sorry, it was an error, let's try to come up with what we think is a reasonable redemption plan."
