(Santa Anita opens Dec. 26)

TEVEZ THE TIGER: Highly regarded 2yo maiden shipped in from Keeneland for trainer Eoin Harty. Tevez would have beaten most 2yo maidens on the grounds, but had the misfortune of facing the talented Position A. He ran his heart out losing the bob. This one will be a single in next start. $$$

SILENT WESTERN: First-time starter showed high speed for underrated trainer James Kasparoff. She led the entire trip, got overtaken late by the even money favorite, but finished a clear second.

CAVANAL: Just broke his maiden, but has shown signs of being a top notch turf horse. With this win under his belt it may have been a wakeup call. Look for another big effort in his next start going long on the grass.

LUNAR CITY: First-time starter was let go at 46-1. She ran a super race finishing a strong fourth despite being caught down on the rail. This one could pay boxcars in her next start.

LAVENDER TOUCH: First-time starter was hammered at the windows, but reared at the start and was way back. She swung out into the stretch and came roaring home to just miss the place by a half-length. $$$$$

GOOCH’S DREAM: Back in my early days at Waterford Park, I would watch all the races on the TV in the clubhouse, When races were close, those watching outside couldn’t tell who won and I saved lots of bets betting on the photo. I watched the rerun at least 10 times and still think Gooch’s Dream won by a long nose. The doctored photo says the winner Kbello’s nose grew at the finish. Someone must have lied for that horse’s nose to grow.

DRAKE LAKE: Lost all chance when squeezed back at the start. Look for a much better effort with a clean break in next start.

DREAM CAT: Was exiting our HTW list and just got another bad trip. We will continue to follow for one more race. If she doesn’t get to the winner’s circle in her next we will bypass her in the future.

STAR DIVA: Was best in this race, but got in tight early and was squeezed back to last. She made a nice late move, but it was too late. Next time. $$$

HOLY COYOTE: May have been best in this race, but just had a nightmare trip. Closed fast late to just miss the place. $$$$$

BARBAROSSO: Stumbled into a foe at the start and then got caught down on the inside. He swung out late and surged, but just missed in what was a great try. $$$

DRESBORO ROAD: First-time starter was steadied between horses at the start and fell back. Came storming down the lane and just missed the place by a nostril.

BLACKJACK KETCHUM: Looked like the real deal down the lane, but got caught behind the tiring winner and just could not get out until it was too late. Take him next time out.
