by Ray Poirier | John Marshall, vice president and general manager of The Meadows racino in Pennsylvania, has resigned to accept a position at Calder Race Course in Florida.

The Meadows, which features harness racing as well as a large number of slot machines, is owned by the Las Vegas partners, Bill Paulos and Bill Wortman. Calder races thoroughbred horses and is owned by Churchill Downs Inc. (CHDN).

The announcement surprised the harness racing industry since Marshall played a key role in the activities of Harness Tracks of America (HTA). He was chairman of the group’s Racing, Simulcasting, OTB and Internet committee and had indicated that he was looking forward to the completion of The Meadows’ new racing facility scheduled to open in early May.

However, in announcing his decision to accept the Calder appointment, Marshall said he was "honored" to have been given "this great opportunity."
