New York Gov. David Paterson’s plan to install slot machines at Belmont Park racetrack was boosted last week by the support provided by Sen. Malcolm Smith the new majority leader of the state Senate.

Paterson has been looking for ways to reduce the state’s projected budget deficit of $15 billion and he believes that adding slots to the popular racetrack; would generate much needed revenue.

The state already has approved 4,500 video slot machines for Aqueduct racetrack construction of the facility has already begun by gaming license holder Delaware North.

Opposed to the Belmont idea is Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver who argues that the market cannot support two such facilities, just eight miles apart.
