Taiwan approved casinos in their offshore islands

by Ray Poirier | It’s been talked about for years but on Sunday the Asian gaming market was primed for expansion when the parliament of Taiwan approved casinos in their offshore islands.

The goal, a supporter explained, is to boost tourism and speed economic development by competing with other Asian cities such as Macau, where gaming has been an outstanding success, and Singapore, expected to be the next gaming Mecca when Las Vegas Sands Corp. (LVS) opens its $2.8 billion resort at the end of this calendar year.

So far, there are at least three operators looking to build a casino on the Taiwan island of Penghu.
